As Deadline For NIN Registration Terminates, Nigerians Voice Frustration.

Deadline for telephone subscribers to link their National Identity Numbers (NIN ) to their SIM cards terminated yesterday and as usual, hundreds of Nigerians have besieged the Akure Office of the National Identity management Commission, NIMC, defying Covid-19 protocols owing to eagerness to get enrolled.

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, had earlier ordered telecommunication companies to deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their National Identity Number on the 19th of January.

Orange FM’s OLUMIDE ADELUWOYE reports that the road linking the state to Police Headquarters was taken over by depressed citizens who were locked out of the Commission’s gate.

Hundreds of Nigerians have once again voiced their frustrations over the difficulties associated with the ongoing integration of SIM cards with the National Identification Number (NIN) ordered by the Federal Government, with many saying they’re not satisfied with the conduct of the commission.

A legal practitioner, Yemi Adetoyinbo said overcrowding of people at the gates of NIMC office is an invitation of Covid-19 pandemic.

He therefore called on the federal government to extend the exercise for Nigerians to have ample opportunity to register.

Recall that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directed Nigerians to link their Subscribers Identification Modules (SIM) cards to their National Identification Number (NIN).

Responding, the state coordinator of NIMC, Mr Akinwale Agbotoba said directive has been given by the minister of Communication and digital economy, Issa Pantami that Subscribers with NIN have until January 19 as deadline to link their NIN with their SIM cards while subscribers without NIN have until February 9th to do so.

Mr Agbotoba noted that the commission would continue to serve the interest of the people.

He however appealed to the residents to comply with operational guidelines which have been designed by the commission to reduce congestion .

As the registration continues, NIN is now a compulsory requirement for renewal of drivers license, national passport, NHIS documentation, pension documentation and examination requirement
