As World Celebrates WFD, FG Enumerates Gains In Agric Sector

The Federal Government has affirmed that about four point two million Nigerians have benefitted from provisions through the agricultural sector within the past two years.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammad Mahmood made the ststement at a press briefing during the celebration of the 2021 World Food Day in Abuja.

 Mahmood said in the area of capacity building, over two million farmers have been trained and empowered on different agricultural value chains.

He noted that through the National Accelerated Fish Production Programme, over 783 metric tonnes of fish was cultivated via the exploration of marine resources in the Deep Sea/Exclusive Economic Zone and the exploration of inland water bodies by fish farmers and fishermen.

The minister further said the agricultural sector would increase its contribution to the nation’s GDP from 23 % to 50 % in the next 10 years

He also said that with the efforts of agricultural entrepreneurs and inputs of other industry operators, the sector would achieve the target.
