Correspondent Examines Akeredolu’s Journey To Victory In 2017



On February 24th 2017, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu became the 5th democractcally Elected Governor of Ondo state and thus took over the helms of affairs as Governor of Ondo state.

In this special report, orange fm’s Ebunoluwa Akinroyeje takes a look at the Governor Akeredolu’s Journey to victory and his triumph at the 2017 Governorship Election.

The journey to occupy the seat of power in the alagbaka government house started for Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, so many years back.

But on September 3 2016, he emerged the APC flagbearer and gubernatorial candidate having keenly contested the party’s primaries with 23 other aspirants by polling 669 votes.

During his electioneering campaign, Arakunrin Akeredolu alongside party leaders promised massive industrialization job creation,timely payment of salaries, rehabilitation and construction of roads to mention but a few.

On November 16th that same year, Ondo state residents went to the polls to elect their Governor: a process through which Arakunrin Aketi as he is fondly called emerged winner.

Inec’s returning officer, Prof Abdul Ganiyu announced Akeredolu’ s victory with 224,842 votes to defeat 27 other candidates as PDP’s Eyitayo Jegede came a distant second having polled 150,380 votes.

As a result of that, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was sworn in as the 5th democratically elected Governor of ondo state on the 24th of February 2017 after he had a taken the oath of office and oath of allegiance.

After they had congratulated the new Governor on his victory at the polls, residents placed their demands before him.

In fulfilment of his electioneering campaigns, the governor executed some landmark projects across the state which include but not limited to : creation of The Ondo linyl industrial park, construction of the redemption brigde at ore, dredging of the araromi seaside with the longest coastline in Africa, levelling of oke alabojuto road in ikare, signing of MOU for reconnecting the southern senatorial district to the national grid, dualization of major roads across the state just to mention a few.

On whether the governor reneged on his campaign promises, the people have this to say.

Critical stakeholders also bore their minds on the governor’s performance in the last four years.

Having satisfactorily delivered the dividends of democracy during his first term in office,the people of the state again on the 20th of October 2020 gave their mandate to the talk and do governor to lead the way for the next four years though with greater demands from the people and he will be sworn in on the 24th of this month.
