FUTA community salutes research exploits of Dr Gideon Idowu

The glory brought to the Federal University of Technology, Akure by one of its academic staff, Dr Gideon Idowu continues to excite the university community

Dr Gideon Idowu who won two international grants for research projects on Covid-19 is of the Industrial Chemistry department.

Orange FM’s Gbenga Oluwajana who had a conversation with Dr Idowu and other members of the academic community reports that the recipient of the grant is passionate about environmental protection through reserch

Recently Dr. Gideon Idowu won two international grants to specifically examine the fate and impact of medical face masks on soil ecosystem

The grants which are from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), United Kingdom and the Natural Environment Research Council-British Ecological Society (NERC-BES), United Kingdom tend to contribute to the development of strategies for dealing with vast numbers of disposable face masks and how they should be disposed of safely.

The university don who noted that over 5 billion people use facemasks on daily basis across the world noted that the disposal of these facemasks needs to be looked into to preserve the ecosystem and the environment.

Idowu who highlighted the challenges faced by researchers in getting sponsors encouraged them not to give up in their efforts towards providing sustainable solutions to issues that border on the society.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of development at FUTA, Prof. Philip Oguntunde described the grants as a plus to the university while commending the recipient and several others who have won in the past for not relenting in making the university relevant globally in spite of the challenges the education sector is facing in the country.

The Public Rlations Officer of FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo underscored the importance of research works noting that students and staff of the university are motivated to put into practice their research works for the overall benefit of the society.
