People should develop the culture of visiting the hospital promptly anytime they have persistent cough to ensure early detection and treatment of tuberculosis

Orange FM’s Odunayo odeja reports that this year’s commemoration of World TB day with the theme “the clock is ticking” seeks to draw attention to the debilitating effects of the medical condition on the socio- economic stability of any society.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is celebrated on 24th of March every year to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.

The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing the disease.

The Ondo state manager of the tuberculosis and leprosy project, Dr Oluwafemi Aina said the theme for this year’s commemoration conveys the message that the world is running out of time to act on the commitments to end TB.

While advising people to visit hospitals when they have persistent cough, Dr. Aina said early diagnosis often helps in the treatment of the disease and also prevents it from damaging internal organs.

The risk of tuberculosis is on the high with the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting the call to residents to take their health seriously.
