The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Olabanji Oladapo has hailed Aruna Quadri after the Nigerian became the first African to reach the quarter-finals of the World Table Tennis Contender Series in Doha, Qatar.
Quadri beat Indian champion Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 3-0 to set up a round of 16 tie against Portugal’s Joao Geraldo.
At the Lusail Sports Arena in Doha, the Nigerian continued his good run with another superlative performance to record a 3-2 (10-12, 12-10, 12-10, 4-11, 11-6) win over the Portuguese.
Aruna will today face Chinese Taipei’s Yun-Ju Lin, who has been described as the Chinese Nemesis.
The $200,000 prize money WTT Contender Series is one of the two tiers of the new WTT event structure, while the Middle East Hub marks the first official event of the WTT era.
