Ondo State Government is to embark on channelization of waterways and clearing of drainages in Akungba Akoko and its environs to avert flooding in the area.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Sunday Akinwalire who gave the assurance during a visit to areas affected by flood attributed the incident to improper waste disposal.
Areas to be channelized include, omiori-erin in Akungba Akoko, edua river along supaare road, and river dada in ikare Akoko.
Elder Jacob ogidigbo, a resident of Akungba Akoko explained how the flood affected his house due to blocked waterways.
Another resident, Felix Adegoke from Okusa quarters in Akungba attributed flooding in the area to lack of drainages,
Soliciting government intervention to avert greater disaster.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr Sunday Akinwalire while on a visit to the area, cautioned the people to desist from acts capable of causing flooding such as blocking the drainages.
He assured them that work has already commenced on river ori-erin and will not stop until the threats to their peaceful occupation of the area is totally removed.
In Ikare Akoko, residents lauded government ‘s efforts to ensure that flooding is curtailed by channelization of river Dada, which they said before now, was a threat to the lives of the people .
Mr Sunday Akinwalire further charged residents on effective and proper waste disposal to avert flooding.
