Sunshine Queens of Akure yesterday thrashed Pelican Stars 4-1 in the match day eight of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
The match played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure had the visitors taking the lead through an own goal by Sunshine Queens’ defender, Sunday Opeyemi in the 35th minute of the encounter to make it 1-0.
Six minutes later, Sunshine Queens defender, Tosin Demehin scored an audacious freekick from 35yards to equalise for the home team to make it 1-1.
Two minutes later, Sunshine Queens midfielder, Suliat Abideen scored another freekick from the left side of the pitch, which dropped into the net of helpless Pelican Stars goalkeeper, Love Okon for the first half to end 2-1.
Two minutes after the hour mark, Adaobi Okah made the goal three for the home side after Pelican’s goalkeeper had dropped the ball from a corner kick for a simple tap in 3-1.
Sunshine Queens finally put the icing on the cake with another wonderful goal from midfielder Suliat Abideen that caught Okon unawares in the 76th minute to end the game 4-1.
The Head Coach of Pelican Stars, Olaleke Sanusi, in his postmatch interview said he did not expect to fall to a heavy defeat as such.
Sunshine Queens’ midfielder, Suliat Abideen who scored two goals in the encounter said she was very excited.
