World Teachers Day is celebrated every year on 5th of October to express gratitude to teachers for their contribution to preparing children to face the world intellectually.

The day was first introduced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 as an event to commemorate the diligence and hard work of teachers all around the world.

Orange FM’s Olumide Adeluwoye reports that the 2021 World Teachers’ Day focused on the support teachers need, to fully contribute to the recovery process under the theme “Teachers at the heart of education recovery”.

The World Teachers day is observed in more than 100 nations, including United States, Canada, Australia and India which also marks National Teachers’Day on 5th September.

The day not only acknowledges the immense dedication and zeal of teachers to prepare a child to face the world but also on issues like employment, training and significant difficulties that revolve around the job.

According to UNESCO, World Teachers Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the agency’s 1966 recommendation concerning the status of teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

A Retired Teacher, Mrs Omolade Oludare said teachers need to be honoured and celebrated emphasizing that teaching is a noble profession and should not be looked down upon calling for training of teachers at all levels and entitlement of teachers should be the same with the civil service in which the Ondo State Government has keyed into.

A School Administrator, Pastor Amu Samuel said that the efforts of teachers can never be negotiated saying they are moulders of life in all ramifications and should be celebrated at all times.

Others opined that teachers take care of every child without bias and instill confidence and courage making them qualified and competent.

It is believed that training of teachers and proper welfare package would go a long way at ensuring that knowledge is being impacted into the children for better future.
