2027 ELECTIONS: IGP VOWS TIGHTER SECURITY, PEACEFUL POLLS
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians of improved security arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Disu gave the assurance while receiving a delegation led by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Mr Leonardo Santos Simão, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting focused on the Nigeria Police Force’s preparedness for the elections and strategies to ensure a peaceful, secure and inclusive electoral process.
Simão said the visit provided an opportunity to discuss election security preparations against the backdrop of prevailing security challenges across West Africa and the Sahel.
He emphasised the need to prevent political competition from escalating into violence, while sustaining public confidence in the neutrality and professionalism of the Police.
The UN representative also underscored the importance of collaboration among relevant stakeholders in safeguarding the electoral process and promoting democratic stability.
The engagement reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force and the United Nations to supporting credible, peaceful and violence-free elections in 2027.
