2027 ELECTION: INEC CONFIRMS AVAILABILITY OF NON-SENSITIVE MATERIALS IN ONDO

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo State says non-sensitive materials for the 2027 General Elections are already available, assuring residents of its preparedness for the exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Mutiu Agboke, disclosed this on Wednesday in Akure during a courtesy visit to the Deji of Akure, Oba Adetoyinbo Aladelusi.

Agboke said the available materials included mats, generators and operational vehicles, while the commission was awaiting the arrival of sensitive materials ahead of the elections.

He explained that the visit was part of efforts to engage traditional institutions and other stakeholders in the commission’s preparations, particularly in mobilising eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The REC expressed concern over what he described as the lackadaisical attitude of some residents towards PVC collection, calling for the intervention of traditional rulers to encourage greater participation in the electoral process.

He also urged traditional institutions to use their influence to discourage vote buying and electoral violence, while appealing to parents to prevent their children from being recruited by politicians to perpetrate violence.

Agboke further called on political parties to adhere strictly to electoral guidelines and regulations.

He warned INEC officials against absenteeism and dereliction of duty, stressing that disciplinary measures would be taken against anyone found wanting in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Responding, the Deji of Akure, Oba Adetoyinbo Aladelusi, commended INEC for its level of preparedness and assured the commission of the support of traditional institutions in promoting peaceful electoral participation.

The monarch promised to mobilise market women and other residents who were yet to collect their PVCs, stressing that voter registration and participation remained important to the democratic process.

He expressed optimism that the 2027 General Elections in Ondo State and Nigeria would be peaceful, adding that traditional rulers were committed to supporting government initiatives without engaging in partisan politics.
