Former Argentina captain Lionel Messi has received the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, describing the recognition as an honour that goes beyond his achievements on the football pitch.
Messi said his father was particularly excited about the award and insisted that he attend the ceremony despite his demanding match schedule.
According to a report by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, the Inter Miami forward said the recognition represented more than his accomplishments throughout his illustrious career.
Messi added that his father’s excitement made the honour even more special, expressing confidence that he was also enjoying the moment.
The Argentine football star has won multiple Ballon d’Or titles and led Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also enjoyed considerable success at club level, particularly during his time at Barcelona.
The Princesa de Asturias Awards recognise outstanding achievements in various fields, including sports, arts, science and international cooperation.
