The Ondo State House of Assembly has approved a proposed constitutional amendment to provide for the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.
Orange FM reports that the approval was given during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, following consideration of the Bill seeking to alter the 1999 Constitution, as amended, to provide for a decentralised policing system.
With the approval, Ondo has joined 24 other states in supporting the proposed amendment, bringing the total number of supporting states to 25.
The Leader of the House, Olatunji Oshati, who moved the motion for approval, said the proposed amendment would pave the way for the establishment of State Police.
The motion was seconded by Stephen Abitogun and received unanimous support from lawmakers present.
Ruling on the matter, Speaker Olamide Oladiji said the establishment of State Police would enhance the protection of lives and property across the country.
He added that the resolution was supported by two-thirds of the members of the House.
The proposed amendment, which was transmitted to state legislatures by the National Assembly after being formally received by its Clerk on September 16, 2026, requires approval by at least 24 of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before it can proceed to the President for assent, in line with Section 9 of the Constitution.
States that have yet to indicate support for the proposed amendment are Lagos, Ebonyi, Kogi, Niger, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano and Sokoto.
The approved bill has been transmitted to the National Assembly for further legislative action.
