Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director, James Comey, is facing federal charges for the third time following moves by prosecutors to charge him with allegedly leaking national defence information.
A court filing indicates that the latest case centres on an alleged disclosure of classified information to The New York Times in October 2016, when Comey was still serving as FBI Director.
Although details of the two counts remain limited in the three-page court filing, Comey’s lawyers disclosed in separate court papers that the allegations relate to the purported disclosure of sensitive information to the newspaper.
The latest development marks the third time the United States Department of Justice has moved to bring criminal charges against Comey, a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.
In a video posted on Substack on Monday, Comey denied any wrongdoing, describing the charges as an appalling abuse.
The former FBI chief has repeatedly rejected allegations of misconduct as legal and political battles surrounding his activities continue.
