The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will soon release an updated list of candidates for the 2027 general elections following a review of complaints relating to errors in candidates’ information and nomination records.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed this on Tuesday in Gombe while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of an interactive session with commission staff from the North-East zone.
Professor Amupitan said the commission received complaints about misspelt candidates’ names and cases of double nominations, necessitating a review of the published list.
He explained that the commission had allowed the maximum 14-day period for the review to enable affected parties to report discrepancies and allow INEC to examine the complaints.
The INEC chairman noted that errors could occur during the compilation and publication of candidates’ information, making it necessary to provide an opportunity for corrections.
He said the commission was preparing to make the outcome of the review public but did not specify a date for the release of the revised list.
The updated list is expected to reflect corrections approved by the commission and provide clarification on complaints considered during the review.
However, INEC’s planned publication does not mean that every disputed or omitted candidate will automatically be included, as nomination disputes must be resolved in accordance with applicable electoral laws and relevant legal decisions.
The review comes as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The accuracy of candidates’ names and nomination records remains important to the electoral process, as discrepancies could create uncertainty for political parties, candidates and voters.
INEC has urged stakeholders to rely on its official publications for confirmation of candidates’ details as preparations for the elections continue.
