The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced an investigation into suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs discovered in the preliminary register of voters published on its website.
The commission gave the assurance in a statement on Tuesday by the Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, following public concerns over suspicious photographs in the register.
INEC explained that the online register published on October 26 was the same preliminary register displayed nationwide from October 9 to 15 for the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
It clarified that the online version did not reflect its ongoing data-cleanup activities.
The commission said investigations were ongoing to determine how the questionable photographs entered the register, including possible technical or procedural lapses.
It assured Nigerians that all verified irregularities would be corrected before the final register is certified on December 15, 2026.
INEC urged citizens and stakeholders to continue scrutinising the voters’ register, describing public participation as essential to ensuring its accuracy and integrity.
