Fourth-tier Fleetwood Town have pulled off a stunning upset in the English League Cup, defeating Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday.
The victory sent Fleetwood, who sit 84 places below Arsenal in the English football pyramid, into the quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch emerged as the hero, saving Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty before Conor Haughey converted the decisive kick to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Fleetwood, who began the match as the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, took the lead in the 21st minute through Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced captain Martin Odegaard at half-time in a bid to turn the game around, and summer signing Viktor Gyokeres equalised five minutes into the second half.
However, the visitors struggled to break down Fleetwood’s resilient defence and were reduced to ten men in the 85th minute when 16-year-old Max Dowman received a straight red card for kicking out at an opponent following a heavy challenge.
Despite fielding a rotated side, Arsenal still had several established international players in their line-up but failed to find a winning goal before the match went to penalties.
The defeat marked another painful penalty-shootout setback for Arteta’s team, five months after losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain through the same method.
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor described the result as the greatest moment in the club’s history, praising his players for their determination against the English champions.
Goalkeeper Lynch also revealed that Fleetwood drew inspiration from Grimsby Town’s shock victory over Manchester United in the competition the previous season.
Arteta, meanwhile, expressed disappointment with Arsenal’s performance, saying the team had failed to meet the high standards expected of the club and lacked the quality needed to secure victory.
