African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that he was attacked by suspected thugs in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
The incident occurred at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of the town after an interview at a radio station on Friday.
Sowore alleged that about 20 armed men who stormed the restaurant attacked him and his entourage with sticks, bottles and threatened to kill him if he returned to the state.
He allegedly said the attackers were connected to the Ekiti State Government House and that operatives of the Department of State Services DSS, made his location known to the attackers.
The activist also said the security operatives took possession of the CCTV footage of the restaurant to suppress evidence.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson has given a different account based on investigations and that, Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at the restaurant.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said officers responded to a distress call, following which the activist was rescued and taken to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti for medical attention for the minor injuries he sustained.
The Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered an investigation into the incident to identify those responsible.
Reports also say Amnesty International has called for an investigation into the incident and demanded guarantees for Sowore’s safety.
Recall that prior to this development, it was rumoured that the human rights activist was abducted by unknown gunmen.
Ekiti state police command has made clarifications on the occurrence.
