OWENA DAM PROJECT: AIYEDATIWA TARGETS END TO WATER SCARCITY IN 7 LGs
Ondo State Government has intensified efforts to end water scarcity in seven local government areas with the arrival of the first batch of ductile iron pipes and equipment for the rehabilitation of the Owena Multipurpose Dam Water Treatment Plant and expansion of Akure’s water infrastructure.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa disclosed this while inspecting the consignment delivered by CGC Nigeria Limited in Akure.
He described the arrival of the equipment as a major milestone in the implementation of the National Urban Water Sector Reform Project and the Akure Urban Water Supply Project, aimed at restoring reliable pipe-borne water supply to residents.
The governor said the project would involve the rehabilitation of the Owena Water Treatment Plant, construction of an 800-millimetre transmission pipeline to Akure, a new reservoir at Oke Aro and expansion of distribution networks.
It also includes the rehabilitation of three township reservoirs at Okebola.
Aiyedatiwa, who recalled that the project was flagged off in December 2025, urged the contractor to ensure proper handling and installation of the equipment, while maintaining quality, safety and accountability.
He stressed that access to potable water was essential to public health, economic growth and community development, assuring residents of his administration’s commitment to improving water supply across the state.
The project, supported by the French Development Agency and the African Development Bank, is being implemented by the Ondo State Water Corporation.
Earlier, the Administrative Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Mrs Victoria Adetoye, expressed optimism about the project’s impact on water supply in the state.
The Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Wang Peng, assured that the project would be completed on schedule and in accordance with required quality standards.
The project is expected to improve access to potable water in the benefiting local government areas and strengthen water supply infrastructure across Ondo State.
