The United States has placed 11 African countries under its highest travel advisory, warning American citizens against visiting the destinations over security and other risks.
The countries are Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.
The US Department of State’s Level 4 advisory, tagged “Do Not Travel,” is its most severe warning category. It cites threats including terrorism, armed conflict, kidnapping, violent crime and civil unrest.
The department also warns that its ability to provide emergency assistance to American citizens may be limited in some of the affected countries.
The advisory is a travel-safety warning for US citizens and does not constitute a general travel ban for citizens of other countries.
