Nigeria and the Yoruba nation have lost a revered elder statesman, educationist and political leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, whose life was dedicated to education, progressive politics, democracy and Yoruba unity.
Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Pa Fasoranti began his career as a teacher before becoming a school principal and establishing educational institutions, including Akure High School.
Orange FM’s Oluseye Akinwalere report that his commitment to public service extended to politics, where he participated in the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria.
He also served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under Governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983.
As leader of Afenifere, Pa Fasoranti championed Yoruba interests, justice, equity and true federalism, earning widespread respect for his dedication to the organisation’s ideals.
The Director-General of Afenifere, Sola Ebiseni, and an elder statesman and member of the organisation, Basorun Sehinde Arogbofa, described his leadership as impactful, saying he left behind a stronger Afenifere. They urged his successors to remain united, work harder and sustain his vision for the Yoruba nation.
Other Afenifere members, Chief Korede Duyile and Chief Femi Aluko, remembered Pa Fasoranti as a humble and accommodating leader who promoted peaceful dialogue and reconciliation, despite disagreements within the organisation.
His daughter, Funmilayo Fasoranti, also paid tribute to him, celebrating his exemplary role as a father and his concern for the well-being of younger generations.
Throughout his long life, Pa Fasoranti witnessed significant political and social changes in Nigeria, leaving his mark on education, democratic struggles and progressive politics.
As tributes continue to pour in, he will be remembered for his sacrifices, humility and unwavering commitment to public service, as well as his enduring call for unity among the Yoruba people
