The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has launched the second revision of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code to improve pipeline access, reduce avoidable losses and strengthen gas transportation across Nigeria and other African countries.
The Authority’s Chief Executive, Rabiu Umar, disclosed this at the 2026 OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos, explaining that the revised code would establish clearer rules for gas shippers and transporters operating within the country’s pipeline network.
Umar said the revision builds on the gains recorded since the introduction of the initial code, including a 30 per cent reduction in gas imbalance on the Western Network and an increase in the number of shippers using the system.
He explained that the code provides guidelines for injecting gas into shared pipelines, measuring volumes and nominating quantities for transportation, thereby promoting transparency and reducing disputes among operators.
The NMDPRA chief executive added that the revised framework would address technical and commercial challenges, including gas shrinkage, which contributes to avoidable losses during transportation and processing.
He noted that the code would also support the expansion of pipeline infrastructure, including the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano gas pipeline.
Umar further said the framework would strengthen cross-border gas transportation, citing Nigeria’s participation in the West African Gas Pipeline project and proposed pipeline connections linking Nigeria to Algeria and Morocco.
