The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians of improved security ahead of the 2027 general elections, promising enhanced intelligence gathering, strategic deployment of personnel and surveillance to prevent violence and electoral disruption.
The assurance comes amid concerns raised by the Inter-Party Advisory Council Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, over alleged political interference, electoral violence, corruption and barriers to opposition participation.
The two officials spoke in Abuja at the dissemination of the Ekiti and Osun governorship election observation reports and a dialogue on priority electoral reforms.
The event was organised by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria in collaboration with The Kukah Centre, The Albino Foundation Africa, Yiaga Africa, the International Press Centre and the Centre for Media and Society.
The Inspector-General was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Isyaku Mohammed, who coordinated security operations during the 2026 Osun governorship election.
Disu also disclosed that police officers were undergoing training to strengthen their capacity to handle election-related security challenges and ensure peaceful conduct of the 2027 polls.
