The Ondo State Government has activated a 240-kilowatt (kW) solar power system at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, in a move to address the hospital’s electricity challenges and strengthen healthcare delivery.

The project, executed by the Ondo State Power Company Limited (OSPCL), was approved by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and activated on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the instance of the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi.

Speaking at the activation, Dr. Alabi commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his timely intervention and commitment to improving public services, describing the initiative as a practical demonstration of the administration’s OUR EASE agenda.

He disclosed that the solar installation is projected to generate approximately 1,244,160 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, providing additional power to support critical hospital operations.

The Commissioner noted that a reliable electricity supply is essential for the effective functioning of a teaching hospital, particularly for medical equipment, diagnostic facilities, laboratories and emergency services.

He expressed optimism that the intervention would ease some of the electricity-related challenges that have affected the hospital’s operations over the years.

Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director of UNIMEDTH, Professor Gbala Michael, commended the Governor for responding promptly to the hospital’s power needs.

He described electricity as the lifeline of a functional hospital, noting that a dependable power supply is critical to efficient healthcare delivery and the smooth operation of medical facilities.

While expressing appreciation for the intervention, Professor Michael called for further investment in the hospital’s power infrastructure.

“Though, like Oliver Twist, we need more of it, this is a very good start for us,” he said.

The activation was witnessed by the Managing Director of OSPCL, Engineer Olumayowa Ajumobi, and other officials.

The installation marks another step in the state government’s efforts to deploy sustainable energy solutions to critical public institutions, improve healthcare infrastructure and enhance the well-being of residents.

The system’s projected annual generation translates to an average output of about 142 kilowatts, although actual performance will depend on factors including sunlight availability, weather conditions and system efficiency.
