The Federal Government has approved plans to develop new eastern and western electricity grids as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s recurring national grid collapses.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at the recent HBSAN Energy Conference in Lagos, saying the government was preparing to commence the procurement process for the projects.
Tegbe said Nigerians could begin to experience the benefits of the new infrastructure within two to three years.
He also revealed that the government had commenced a nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure to identify faults, assess existing facilities and determine areas requiring urgent repairs or replacement.
According to the minister, the exercise is aimed at ensuring that investments in the power sector target the actual causes of recurring failures rather than directing resources towards equipment that does not require immediate intervention.
He said the audit would help the government prioritise critical infrastructure and strengthen the country’s electricity transmission network.
