Nigerians are urging presidential candidates to present realistic, measurable and achievable campaign promises that will address the rising cost of living ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With high fuel and food prices, unemployment and declining purchasing power continuing to affect households, voters want candidates to explain how their proposed policies will be funded and implemented.

According to report the demand reflects public frustration over the gap between campaign promises and the economic realities facing Nigerians.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, headline inflation dropped to 14.63 per cent in September 2026 from 15.39 per cent in August, while food inflation stood at 19.59 per cent.

The figures highlight why many households are yet to experience significant relief despite the moderation in headline inflation.

On petrol pricing, former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has pledged to restore fuel subsidy, while Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Peter Obi has supported a return to subsidy under a more transparent arrangement.

Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate Donald Duke has also promised to reduce petrol prices to about ₦300 per litre if elected, proposing a pricing model that would make locally supplied crude more affordable for domestic refiners.

Meanwhile, legal practitioner Olisa Agbakoba has urged candidates to clearly explain their petroleum pricing policies, describing the rising cost of living as a major concern ahead of the election.

A young entrepreneur, Adewale Kareem, also cautioned Nigerians against accepting campaign promises without examining their feasibility, calling for commitments capable of improving the economy and reducing fuel prices.

The report stresses the need for candidates to provide clear timelines, funding plans and measurable targets for policies on employment, food production, electricity and security.

As the 2027 elections approach, voters are demanding practical proposals that demonstrate how campaign promises will translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives.
