The Ondo State Government has constituted an emergency management committee to strengthen preparedness and prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease into the state following a reported confirmed case in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Orange FM’s Joshua Adedeji reports that the Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Health Matters, Professor Simidele Odimayo, disclosed this in an interview with Orange FM, assuring residents that the state was prepared to respond to any possible outbreak.

Professor Odimayo explained that Ebola is not airborne but spreads mainly through direct contact with infected persons or their body fluids.

He listed symptoms of the disease to include sudden fever, severe headache, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, urging residents to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures.

The Special Adviser advised the public to avoid contact with the blood and other body fluids of suspected cases, as well as handling or consuming infected animals that have not been properly cooked.

He also cautioned against stigmatising suspected patients, urging healthcare workers to use appropriate protective equipment and provide necessary care.

Professor Odimayo said the committee comprises key health officials, including the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banjo Ajaka; the Special Adviser on Health Matters, Professor Simidele Odimayo; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Francis Akanbiemu; and representatives of primary healthcare and other state health institutions.

The committee is expected to coordinate preparedness efforts, strengthen disease surveillance, intensify public awareness and ensure that health facilities are adequately equipped to identify and manage suspected cases.
