Nigeria’s stock market has lost about five hundred and sixteen billion naira in market value following renewed selling pressure on banking and financial stocks.

The Nigerian Exchange All-Share Index fell by zero point three two per cent to close at 245,116 points, compared with 245,911 points recorded in the previous trading session.

Market capitalisation also declined from 159.67 trillion naira to 159.15 trillion naira, reflecting the drop in share prices.

The banking sector recorded the biggest decline, with the NGX Banking Index falling by one point four nine per cent. Access Holdings and First HoldCo were among the major losers.

The downturn followed increased selling activities by investors seeking to reduce their exposure to some banking and financial stocks.

Analysts say movements in share prices often reflect investors’ reactions to corporate earnings, interest rates, economic conditions and expectations about the performance of listed companies.

Despite the decline, the Nigerian equities market continues to attract investors looking for opportunities to grow their investments. However, market watchers advise investors to study company performance and understand the risks involved before making investment decisions.

The latest loss highlights the fluctuations in the stock market, where gains and losses are influenced by demand for shares, investor confidence and developments in the wider economy
