The need for professionalism, strict adherence to operational procedures and cooperation between Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and motorists has been emphasised as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce avoidable road traffic incidents.
Orange FM reports that a Principal Vehicle Inspection Officer, Mr. Dikson Olowoniyi, stated this while speaking with Orange FM on the statutory responsibilities of VIOs and the need for safer roadside inspection practices.
Mr. Olowoniyi explained that the primary responsibility of VIOs is to inspect vehicles and ensure they meet roadworthiness standards before being used on public roads.
He noted that their duties also include verifying vehicle documents, certifying driving schools and conducting driving tests for prospective drivers.
According to him, the department also investigates road traffic accidents reported by the police to determine their causes and provide information that could help improve road safety.
Addressing concerns about roadside inspection procedures, Mr. Olowoniyi stressed the importance of professionalism and compliance with established operational guidelines.
He warned that VIOs were not permitted to jump in front of moving vehicles or stop motorists abruptly at blind spots where visibility was limited, noting that such practices could endanger lives.
The Principal Vehicle Inspection Officer also urged motorists to remain patient and cooperate with VIO personnel during routine inspections.
He emphasised that mutual understanding, responsible conduct and strict adherence to traffic regulations by both officers and motorists were essential to ensuring safer roads and preventing avoidable accidents.
