At least 72 people have been killed in cattle raids in South Sudan’s northern Warrap State, according to regional authorities.

Authorities said an unknown number of cattle were stolen and homes burnt during a coordinated attack involving two communities in Tonj North County on Monday.

They explained that such incidents are often linked to reprisal attacks, as cattle remain a major source of wealth and pride for many communities. Livestock are also important for young men who traditionally offer cattle as dowries when marrying.

Reports indicate that the clashes occurred near the border between Warrap and Unity states, with members of the Lou Ariik community allegedly attacking the Apuk Padoch community.

Clashes over territory and cattle rustling remain common in South Sudan, where longstanding communal rivalries continue to fuel insecurity.

The violence comes as the country prepares for its first election since gaining independence in 2011, although the polls have been repeatedly delayed amid ongoing conflict and political instability
