ADEBOYE CHALLENGES JOURNALISTS TO VERIFY FACTS, EMBRACE INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has challenged journalists to uphold accuracy and embrace investigative reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation.
He gave the charge during the first Sunday and thanksgiving service for November, while clarifying the circumstances surrounding a prayer walk in which he carried a placard in 2020.
Pastor Adeboye explained that the exercise was organised to pray against insecurity and killings in the country, contrary to reports suggesting it was a protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He faulted journalists for misrepresenting the incident, noting that the prayer walk took place five years after Jonathan left office in 2015.
The cleric said the walk followed a directive by the Christian Association of Nigeria for churches to organise prayer walks against insecurity.
Pastor Adeboye expressed concern that the inaccurate report gained widespread acceptance without proper verification of the facts.
He urged journalists to investigate issues thoroughly before publication, warning against the distortion of facts and the spread of misleading information.
He stressed the need for responsible journalism that prioritises truth, accuracy and context.
