FLAMINGOS FACE BRAZIL IN HISTORIC U-17 WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL CLASH

Nigeria’s Flamingos will be seeking a place in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time when they confront Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.

The Nigerian girls secured their place in the last four following a narrow 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Sunday’s quarter-final encounter.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the box.

The victory marked only the second time Nigeria would reach the semi-final stage of the competition, having previously achieved the feat in 2022, when they finished with a bronze medal in India.

Coach Akeem Busari’s side will now face a Brazilian team that booked its semi-final ticket with a 2-1 comeback victory over China.

Brazil had earlier edged Poland 8-7 on penalties in the round of 16 after an entertaining 3-3 draw.

The South Americans have also demonstrated their attacking strength, with nine different players finding the net at the tournament, while Greise Kelly leads their scoring chart with three goals.

Brazil coach, Rilany Silva, has described Nigeria as a physically strong side, anticipating a difficult encounter.

However, Busari has charged his players to sustain their determination and give their best against the South Americans.

The encounter is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat, Morocco.

Kick-off is 6 p.m. Moroccan time, equivalent to 7 p.m. Nigerian time, as the Flamingos seek a historic first appearance in the competition’s final.
