Secretary-General of Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, has attributed his decision to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, and support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid to what he described as improved government policies, continuity in governance and the national interest.
Ebiseni, a former South-West Coordinator of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, stated this while featuring on Orange FM’s News and Current Affairs programme, The Roundtable.
Orange FM’s Oluwatunmise Odeleye reports that the Afenifere Secretary-General said his decision followed what he considers significant changes in the administration’s economic policies and its ability to meet its financial obligations.
Ebiseni, who previously criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, said his current position was informed by what he considers the longer-term effects and gains of the policy, as well as the need to sustain some of the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
He argued that replacing the current administration could lead to the introduction of new policies whose benefits might take time to materialise, stressing the need for continuity in government.
Ebiseni also identified the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a major consideration in his decision, particularly because of its significance to the Ilaje coastal communities in Ondo State.
He has previously described the project as highly significant to the coastal people of the state, while calling for the proper alignment of the highway through Ondo’s coastline.
On concerns that his decision represents a political reversal, the former Labour Party chieftain said movement between political platforms was not unusual, pointing to political changes involving Peter Obi and members of his former political camp.
While defending his support for President Tinubu, Ebiseni stressed that his endorsement was not unconditional, saying the administration must continue to be held accountable for its promises and commitments to Nigerians.
The former Commissioner in Ondo State called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain politically active and continue to demand accountability from government.
He maintained that while citizens should support policies they consider beneficial to the country, government must also deliver on its promises and remain responsive to the needs of the people.
