Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus says Cristiano Ronaldo remains welcome in the national team and can return to the squad if he wishes.
Jesus made the statement after Portugal defeated Norway to become the first team to secure a place in the Nations League quarter-finals, despite Ronaldo’s absence.
The 41-year-old forward reportedly left the national team camp last Wednesday after learning that he would not start against Denmark, following Jesus’ decision to leave him on the bench in Portugal’s first meeting with Norway.
Speaking after the latest victory, Jesus said Ronaldo could be selected for the next international window, provided he remains active with his Saudi Arabian club, Al-Nassr.
The coach also said he was willing to speak with Ronaldo before the team’s next matches in November, stressing that the decision to return ultimately rests with the veteran forward.
Jesus said he had previously told Ronaldo that he needed him around the squad, whether playing or not.
He added that Ronaldo should decide how he wants to bring his international career to an end.
Ronaldo, Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, made his international debut in 2003 at the age of 18 and has represented the country at six World Cups.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has previously indicated that 2026 will probably be his final year in professional football.
Meanwhile, Portugal have already secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with two group matches still to play.
Ronaldo’s long-time rival, Lionel Messi, is also set to feature in what has been billed as his final match for Argentina, a friendly against Benin in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
