The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Ondo State says labour unions will continue to agitate for improved welfare packages for workers through dialogue and peaceful negotiations.
The State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Ademola Olapade, stated this on Orange FM’s current affairs programme, Political Digest, while reacting to concerns over the state chapter’s decision not to participate in the three-day nationwide warning strike embarked upon by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, from October 2nd to 4th, 2026.
Orange FM’s Otobot Jim reports that Olapade said the Ondo State chapter opted not to join the strike because it has consistently embraced dialogue and peaceful negotiations in pursuing workers’ demands.
Public sector workers under the JNPSNC had embarked on the warning strike over the rising economic hardship, demanding a reduction in the price of petrol to 500 naira per litre and fresh negotiations on the minimum wage.
While some states, including Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Kaduna, Osun, Oyo and Sokoto, reportedly complied with the directive, others did not participate in the industrial action.
The NLC Chairman said the union had engaged the Ondo State Government on issues concerning workers’ welfare and expressed optimism that the government would take necessary steps to address their concerns.
He commended the government for the timely payment of salaries, promotion of workers and payment of gratuities to retirees, among other interventions.
Olapade assured workers that the NLC would continue to protect their rights and pursue improved welfare for them.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions, JAC, Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni, commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his intervention in the industrial action embarked upon by the institutions.
He said the agreements reached between the state government and the unions led to the suspension of the industrial action.
Ogungbeni also highlighted areas where the union made compromises and outlined the steps that would be taken should the government fail to honour the agreements reached.
He expressed optimism that the agreement would promote industrial harmony and contribute to the overall development of the education sector in Ondo State.
