OLOKOLA’S SECOND CHANCE: DANGOTE’S INDUSTRIAL VISION FOR ONDO’S COAST

For years, Olokola has existed in the imagination of policymakers and investors as a place of enormous but largely unrealised industrial promise. Located along the Ondo coastline and close to major South-West markets, the axis has long been associated with ambitions for a deep seaport, export trade, heavy industry and large-scale manufacturing.
Now, that ambition is being revived. Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, has renewed the company’s commitment to develop a major industrial and free trade zone at Olokola, Ondo State.
The proposed project is expected to combine power generation, gas infrastructure, water, logistics facilities, manufacturing spaces and potentially cement production into a single investment ecosystem.
If the plan moves from proposal to construction as projected, Olokola could become one of the most consequential industrial development projects in the South-West.
Dangote’s vision is not for a conventional industrial estate where investors must independently provide electricity, water, access roads and other basic services before production can begin.
Instead, the proposed Olokola hub is designed as a “plug-and-play” investment zone where manufacturers would come in, connect to pre-existing infrastructure and focus on production.
Dangote said during a courtesy visit to Ondo state governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure that the company will provide infrastructure and remove the bottlenecks around doing business.
That model responds directly to one of Nigeria’s most persistent challenges: the high cost of self-provided infrastructure. Many factories run generators, drill boreholes, build access roads and install private logistics systems before production can begin. Such costs discourage investment, reduce competitiveness and raise the price of goods.
The Olokola project aims to reverse that burden by placing power, water and logistics at the centre of the industrial-zone design.
Construction is expected to begin in final quarter of 2026 with contractors  expected to mobilise to the Olokola site within three to four months
