The United Kingdom has announced plans to accelerate the delivery of air defence missiles to Ukraine as Prime Minister Andy Burnham prepares to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street.
At the meeting, Burnham is also expected to outline plans for further sanctions against Russia over its continued aggression against Ukraine.
Ahead of the meeting, Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine, saying Britain would stand with the country for as long as necessary. He added that Russia’s aggression must not be allowed to succeed.
The UK will also urge its allies to intensify pressure on Moscow, with Chancellor John Healey expected to use meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to call for a boycott of Russian liquefied natural gas.
The visit marks Zelensky’s second trip to the UK since Burnham became prime minister. During his first visit in late July, the two leaders met military personnel and jointly addressed a news conference at a naval base in Portsmouth.
