The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has uncovered and arrested suspects behind a plot targeting its ad hoc staff, particularly members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed this in Enugu during the Commission’s South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 general election.
According to INEC’s Daily Bulletin, the Department of State Services, DSS, helped identify those behind the plot, who are expected to face prosecution soon.
Professor Amupitan also announced plans to convene a security conference to address emerging threats to election security.
He said the Commission had strengthened its partnership with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES, while collaborating with security agencies at national and state levels to develop an intelligence-driven security framework.
The INEC chairman identified declining public trust, voter apathy, and the spread of misinformation and disinformation as major challenges ahead of the elections.
He warned that fake news, unverified rumours and deepfake videos could spread rapidly, stressing that the conduct and competence of electoral officials remained critical to countering false narratives.
Professor Amupitan said INEC would respond through proactive transparency, prompt official communication and strict operational precision at every polling unit.
