More than 100 students from secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo areas of Ogun State have reportedly been hospitalised following another suspected gas emission.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, left students and staff struggling to breathe, with some reportedly fainting.
The affected students were taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, and other healthcare facilities for treatment.
Schools reportedly affected include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, and Itamerin Comprehensive High School, Ago-Iwoye.
A teacher at one of the affected schools said the incident began around 10 a.m., forcing some schools in Ago-Iwoye to shut down as the situation worsened.
Parents reportedly rushed to the schools to take their children home amid growing fears over their safety.
The incident has renewed concerns about recurring gaseous emissions in Ijebu land, with residents and school authorities urging the government to urgently identify the source and prevent further exposure.
Wednesday’s incident is reportedly the fourth such occurrence since April 2026.
Previous incidents reportedly led to the hospitalisation of about 40 students in April, more than 120 in May, and 69 students on June 1.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, had earlier said the state government was working with relevant agencies and experts to establish the cause of the emissions.
The investigation involved the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University.
The governor also disclosed in June that gas analysers had been installed in affected schools, adding that preliminary investigations had identified methane as the gas detected.
The latest incident has intensified calls for urgent action to safeguard students and staff in the affected communities.
