The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has displayed the preliminary voters’ register at ward levels but is yet to upload it to its official website.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this to journalists, clarifying concerns over the online accessibility of the register.
“The voters’ register has been published, but in the wards. It just wasn’t published on our website,” he said.
The clarification follows concerns over the commission’s failure to make the register available online during the scheduled display period of October 9 to 15, 2026.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had urged INEC to publish the preliminary register, warning that its unavailability online could undermine public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku said online access would enable Nigerians to verify their details, identify omissions and challenge questionable entries.
Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 requires INEC to make copies of the voters’ register available for public scrutiny at registration areas and on its official website for seven days within the period stipulated by law.
The exercise is designed to allow registered voters to confirm their details and enable the public to identify omissions or questionable entries before the register is finalised.
With the 2027 general election approaching, the accessibility of the voters’ register remains central to discussions on electoral transparency and public confidence in the process.
