Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has reportedly won a fourth term in office, defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested presidential election.
Lula, 80, reportedly secured 52 per cent of the votes in the run-off election, telling cheering supporters in São Paulo that Brazilians had voted to uphold democracy.
However, Bolsonaro, who reportedly led in the first round, has called for the election results to be annulled.
His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a prison sentence over a plot to overturn the previous election result.
Thousands of Lula’s supporters reportedly took to the streets of São Paulo to celebrate his victory.
The election has also drawn attention to broader political shifts across the region, where left-wing leaders have continued to feature prominently in national politics.
