Nigeria’s Flamingos will battle Mexico for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday.
The Nigerian side head into the knockout encounter with renewed confidence after recovering from an opening defeat to Poland to win their next two Group B matches.
The Flamingos lost 2-1 to Poland before recording a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico and a convincing 3-1 win over defending champions North Korea to finish second in the group with six points.
Mexico also bounced back from an opening 2-0 defeat to Spain, defeating Chile 3-1 to strengthen their hopes of advancing in the competition.
The Mexicans demonstrated resilience by coming from behind against Chile, with Mia Urbano, Citlalli Reyes and Nicole Jimenez finding the net after Catalina Muñoz had given their opponents an early lead.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will draw inspiration from their impressive performance against North Korea, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Oluebube Umejiaku and Kanyinsola Yusuf scoring in the victory.
However, the Flamingos must maintain their attacking momentum and improve defensively to overcome a Mexican side that has shown its ability to respond under pressure.
The Round of 16 encounter in Salé presents Nigeria with an opportunity to build on their group-stage performance and move closer to the tournament title.
With both teams having recovered from early setbacks, the clash is expected to test their discipline, composure and ability to perform under knockout-stage pressure.
