TINUBU TASKS FLAMINGOS TO MAKE HISTORY, WIN FIRST U-17 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TITLE

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, to defeat Japan and secure the country’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

The President gave the charge while congratulating the team on its qualification for the final of the 2026 tournament in Morocco, following a convincing 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Nigeria dominated proceedings, with Queen Joseph opening the scoring in the 56th minute before Awawu Bashiru extended the lead in the 71st minute.

Bashiru completed her brace nine minutes later to put Nigeria three goals ahead, while Brazil grabbed a late consolation in the 89th minute.

In a congratulatory statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the achievement as remarkable, saying it had brought pride and joy to Nigerians both at home and abroad.

He charged the players to approach Saturday’s final with determination, confidence and the fighting spirit that had propelled them to the final.

The President also urged Nigerians to throw their weight behind the young footballers, assuring the team of the nation’s prayers, goodwill and support.

The Flamingos will take on Japan in the final on Saturday, November 7, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. local time.

Nigeria will be aiming to claim its maiden title in the competition, having previously secured a third-place finish in 2022.

Victory against Japan would also see Nigeria become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
