Nigerian education administrator, Amos Dangut, has assumed office as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC.

Dangut officially took over on October 1, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia, according to a statement by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, Demianus Ojijeogu.

He will serve a five-year tenure, ending in September 2031.

Dangut was appointed Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria on October 2, 2023, a position he held until his elevation to the registrarship.

His appointment was ratified by the Council, WAEC’s International Governing Board, at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra in March 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, a Master’s degree and PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning.

He began his professional career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner, before joining the Council in 1998.

Since joining WAEC, Dangut has served in various capacities, including Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division, Branch Controller in Yola, Controller of the Post Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja, and Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office.

WAEC described Dangut as a versatile administrator with expertise in test development, examination administration and branch and zonal office management.

The Council said he had, over the years, leveraged information and communications technology to improve processes in test development, post-examination activities and examination administration.

During his tenure as Head of the National Office, Dangut championed several innovations aimed at strengthening examination delivery, security and efficiency. These included the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and other systems supporting examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring of examiners’ attendance.

As Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC; Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, JUPEB; Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB; and the Grange Educational Foundation.

WAEC said his record of service had been marked by integrity, transparency, diligence and commitment to duty.
