The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official, Mr Adediji Sesan, who was reportedly knocked down by a vehicle along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. today involving a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX, driven by 37-year-old Ayoade Idowu of Gbogi Street, Akure.

In a statement, the deceased was on routine patrol with his team when he reportedly flagged down the vehicle to inspect its particulars.

The driver allegedly stopped initially but drove off when asked to produce the relevant documents, hitting the VIO official in the process.

Sesan sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The police said the driver had been arrested and detained, while preliminary investigations were ongoing.

The case file is expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.

The State Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu however expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and associates of the deceased, assuring that a thorough investigation would be conducted and appropriate legal action taken in accordance with the law.

The Command also urged motorists to obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised traffic enforcement officials, warning against actions that could endanger lives while attempting to evade routine checks.

It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety, protecting lives and property, and maintaining law and order across the state.
