The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has raised concerns over alleged water contamination following the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The monarch said the incident had left residents of the coastal community concerned about the safety of their water source, particularly for drinking, cooking and fishing.
He explained that the situation had caused hardship for residents, who lacked an alternative source of water.
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, which was on a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos, crashed into a swamp near the Nigerian Air Force Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda last Monday.
The crash claimed the lives of all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers.
The aircraft was submerged in the swamp, prompting an extensive search and recovery operation involving military personnel and other emergency agencies.
Speaking with journalists, Oba Odidiomo commiserated with the families of the victims, particularly the wife and relatives of the pilot.
The monarch’s concerns have highlighted the need to assess the safety of the community’s water sources following the crash.
