Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has come out to say that marriage places greater demands on women and that the responsibilities associated with marriage put more weight on women than men.
Arukwe made the remarks during an interview on whether the society had oversold the idea of marriage to women.
Arukwe also said he had never been a strong advocate of marriage because pregnancy, childbirth and the expectation that they adopt their husbands’ surnames after marriage place more responsibility on them .
He said “I’ve never really been an advocate for marriage because I feel like it is more tasking for the woman. She’s the one who bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen.”
Arukwe further explained that the society was coming to terms that marriage is not a prerequisite for a woman’s identity, fulfillment or worth.
Arukwe said”Growing up, people would ask you why you weren’t married at 25 or 30 and talk about how they already had five children by that age.”
His comments have reignited conversations about gender roles, societal expectations and the distribution of responsibilities within marriage.
Arukwe is married to Barbara Boyd-Arukwe, and the couple have two daughters.
