The Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish a Federal College of Agriculture in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State to promote agricultural education and boost farming productivity.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, was passed for third reading following the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions.
Ndume said the proposed institution would address the challenges associated with traditional farming methods and encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices.
He noted that the college would provide farmers with access to improved farming techniques, modern technology, agricultural knowledge and better crop varieties to enhance productivity.
The senator also highlighted Shani’s agricultural potential and strategic location, expressing confidence that the institution would benefit surrounding farming communities.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the committee and the bill’s sponsor, describing the initiative as development-oriented and expressing optimism about its contribution to agricultural growth.
The bill will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence and, if approved, forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
The proposed college is expected to strengthen agricultural education, develop practical farming skills and support economic growth in Borno State and Nigeria at large.
