Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has renamed the International Event and Cultural Centre, popularly known as The Dome, in Akure after former governor Olusegun Mimiko in recognition of his contributions to the development of the state.

The governor announced the decision at an event tagged An Evening of Celebration and Conversation with Mimiko, organised by young professionals in Abuja to commemorate the former governor’s 72nd birthday.

The facility has been renamed the Dr Olusegun Mimiko Cultural and Event Centre.

Aiyedatiwa commended Mimiko’s achievements in healthcare, education and other sectors, particularly his free shuttle bus scheme for students.

He also appreciated the organisers of the event, urging them to remain worthy ambassadors of Ondo State and Nigeria.

Speaking during a fireside conversation, Mimiko challenged young professionals to prioritise hard work, personal development and leadership preparation, stressing that young people must first develop themselves before aspiring to lead others.

He explained that effective leadership required individuals to build capacity and demonstrate competence in one or more areas of endeavour.

The former governor also commended the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, describing it as a significant intervention capable of expanding access to higher education irrespective of students’ family backgrounds.

Mimiko urged young Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, noting that continuity could sustain and expand the student loan scheme.

The event coordinator and former Speaker of the Nigeria Youth Parliament, Ayo Obe, said the celebration was inspired by the moral, intellectual, political and material support Mimiko had provided to young people, alongside his mentorship.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the young people mentored by Mimiko as one of his most enduring achievements, noting that their decision to organise the celebration reflected his lasting impact on their lives.

He urged political leaders and public office holders to invest in mentoring younger generations, stressing that leadership should be measured not only by achievements in office but also by the people developed to carry on its legacy.

In a goodwill message delivered by his representative, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, commended Mimiko’s achievements despite the financial constraints he faced while in office.

The Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, also praised Mimiko’s contributions to healthcare, education and infrastructure, praying for his continued good health and service to humanity.

The Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Adesimbo Victor Kiladejo, represented at the event, equally commended the former governor and the young professionals for the initiative, expressing hope that it would inspire greater commitment to youth development.

Other dignitaries at the event included former Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada; Senator Dayo Faduyile, representing Ondo South Senatorial District; House of Representatives member Fessy West Adefiranye; Hon. Joseph Akinlaja; and other former and serving members of the National Assembly from Ondo State.
