The United States will host the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup from January 5 to 30, 2028, with seven clubs already confirmed for the historic competition.

The tournament, organised by world football governing body FIFA, will feature 19 teams and take place every four years.

Reports say the confirmed clubs include Arsenal, Barcelona, Gotham FC, Club América, Corinthians, Naegohyang and Wuhan Jiangda, while the remaining 12 places will be decided later.

FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer, Sarai Bareman, said the United States was selected because of its experience in hosting major international football competitions, growing interest in women’s football and established sporting infrastructure.

She said the tournament would provide clubs with an opportunity to showcase their quality and introduce women’s club football to a wider global audience.

Under the qualification format, six additional European clubs will join the competition, while Asia, Africa, North America and Central America, and South America will each have three representatives. Oceania will have one club.

The United States previously hosted the men’s Club World Cup in 2025 and is scheduled to co-host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup with Mexico and Canada.

However, the timing of the women’s competition has raised concerns within the domestic game, with the Women’s Super League describing the schedule as potentially “catastrophic” earlier this year because of its possible impact on the women’s football calendar.

The tournament will be another addition to FIFA’s expanding women’s club football programme, following the introduction of the Women’s Champions Cup, whose inaugural edition was won by Arsenal.
